Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Lisa and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, Devil’s Daughter!

Hello my friends, glad to be visiting!

Please summarize the book a la Twitter style for the readers here:

Phoebe, Lady Clare, a beautiful young widow, encounters West Ravenel, who long ago bullied her late husband at boarding school. But West is now a reformed rake whose devastating charm makes her heart beat faster.

Please share the opening lines of this book:

Phoebe had never met West Ravenel, but she knew one thing for certain: He was a mean, rotten bully. She had known it since the age of eight, when her best friend Henry had started writing to her from boarding school.
West Ravenel had been a frequent subject of Henry’s letters. He was a heartless, hardened case of a boy, but his constant misbehavior had been overlooked. It was seen as inevitable that older boys would dominate and browbeat younger ones, and anyone who tattled would be severely punished.

Please share a few Fun facts about this book…

  • Phoebe is the daughter of Evie and Sebastian, the couple from one of my Wallflower novels, Devil In Winter.
  • Sebastian turns out to be a meddling dad.
  • In this book, you will learn about Peruvian bat guano.
  •  There’s a cat named Galoshes.
  • The original Wallflowers make an appearance!

What first attracts your Hero to the Heroine and vice versa?

The first thing West notices about Phoebe is her fiery red hair. Phoebe is attracted by his dry sense of humor.

Using just 5 words, how would you describe Hero and Heroine’s love affair?

Is this rake reformed enough?

The First Kiss…

As she reached around his neck for support, she encountered the edge of his hair where it curled slightly against his nape. The dark locks were cool and lustrous as they slid through her languid fingers. His kiss roughened, his tongue sinking into her as he took what he wanted, and she was lost, drowning in a dark tide of sensation.

As a woman who’d been a wife, mother and widow, she’d thought there was nothing left to learn. But West Ravenel was transforming every notion of what a kiss could be. He kissed like a man who had lived too fast, learned too late, and had finally found the thing he wanted. She couldn’t help writhing in response, her body aching for deeper, closer contact. He reached down with one hand to anchor her hips against his, and it felt so good she could have swooned. She moaned and pressed as tightly as possible to the hard terrain of his body . . . so very hard. Even with the layers of clothing between them, she could feel how aroused he was, the shape of him hard and aggressive.

Trembling, Phoebe turned her mouth from his. Her body didn’t seem to belong to her. She could hardly stand on her own. She couldn’t think. Her forehead leaned on his shoulder as she waited for the wild pumping of her heart to subside.

Without revealing too much, what is your favorite scene in the book?

West returns something he stole from Phoebe’s husband long ago:

“I can’t believe you kept it all these years.” Phoebe tugged a handkerchief from the bodice of her dress and pressed it hard over her eyes, willing the tears to stop. “I cry too easily,” she said in vexation. “I always have. I hate it.”

“Why?”

“It shows weakness.”

“It shows strength,” he said. “Stoic people are the weak ones.”

Phoebe blew her nose and looked up at him. “Do you really think so?”

“No, but I thought saying that might make you feel better.”

A laugh trembled in her throat, and her eyes stopped watering.

“You sat down to dinner with me,” Mr. Ravenel said, “knowing what a brute I was to Henry, and you said nothing. Why?”

“I thought it would be kinder to keep silent.”

Something relaxed in his expression. “Phoebe,” he said softly. The way he said her name, like an endearment, made her insides feel pleasantly weighted. “I don’t deserve such kindness. I was born wicked, and I only grew worse after that.”

If your book was optioned for a movie, what scene would be absolutely crucial to include?

Phoebe discovers to her dismay that she’s been seated next to her late husband’s enemy, for a long formal dinner:

On the place card beside Phoebe’s, a name had been written in elaborate calligraphy: Mr. Weston Ravenel.

Her stomach plummeted.

Mr. Ravenel turned toward her and hesitated, appearing no less surprised than she. He cut an impressive figure in formal evening clothes. The white shirt and necktie contrasted sharply with the amber glow of his skin, while the tailored black coat emphasized the stunning breadth of his shoulders.

The way he stared at her was too focused, too . . . something. She couldn’t decide what to do, only looked back at him helplessly, her insides strung with hot twinges and pangs.

Mr. Ravenel’s gaze flicked down to the place cards and back to her face. “I had nothing to do with the seating arrangements.”

“Obviously,” Phoebe replied crisply, her thoughts in turmoil. According to etiquette, a gentleman usually directed the majority of his attention and conversation to the lady on his left. She was going to have to talk to him for the entire meal.

Readers should read this book …

. . . if they like humor and lots of love scenes!

What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have planned?

I’m currently working on the last Ravenel novel, the story of Lady Cassandra and railway magnate Tom Severin.

Thanks for blogging at HJ!

Excerpt from Devil’s Daughter:

West Ravenel is trying hard to resist his overwhelming attraction to Lady Phoebe Clare, but she’s a woman who goes after what she wants . . .

“If you have any misguided thoughts about taking me into your bed,” West warned gruffly, “you would find it a vastly mediocre experience. I’d be on you like a crazed rabbit, and half a minute later the whole thing would be over. I used to be a proficient lover, but now I’m a burnt out libertine whose only remaining pleasure is breakfast food. Speaking of which—”

Phoebe reached for him, brought herself up hard against him, and interrupted him with her mouth. West flinched as if scalded, and held very still in the manner of a man trying to withstand torture. Undeterred, she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him as passionately as she could, touching her tongue to his stiff lips. The feel and taste of him was exhilarating. Suddenly he responded with a primitive grunt and his mouth clamped on hers, wringing sensation from her with demanding pressure. Forcing her lips apart, he searched her with his tongue the way she remembered, and it felt so good, she thought she might faint. A whimper rose from her throat, and he licked and bit gently at the sound, and sealed their mouths together in a deep, insatiable kiss that involved his lips, breath, hands, body, soul.

Whatever it might be like to go to bed with this man . . . it would be anything but mediocre.

Book Info:

Although beautiful young widow Phoebe, Lady Clare, has never met West Ravenel, she knows one thing for certain: he’s a mean, rotten bully. Back in boarding school, he made her late husband’s life a misery, and she’ll never forgive him for it. But when Phoebe attends a family wedding, she encounters a dashing and impossibly charming stranger who sends a fire-and-ice jolt of attraction through her. And then he introduces himself…as none other than West Ravenel.

West is a man with a tarnished past. No apologies, no excuses. However, from the moment he meets Phoebe, West is consumed by irresistible desire…not to mention the bitter awareness that a woman like her is far out of his reach. What West doesn’t bargain on is that Phoebe is no straitlaced aristocratic lady. She’s the daughter of a strong-willed wallflower who long ago eloped with Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent—the most devilishly wicked rake in England.

Before long, Phoebe sets out to seduce the man who has awakened her fiery nature and shown her unimaginable pleasure. Will their overwhelming passion be enough to overcome the obstacles of the past?

Only the devil’s daughter knows…

Found one I love on line. It’s described as being made of light lilac silk shantung with pleated “watteau” back with train. Stomacher is fully boned, ruched and comes with 3 rhinestones appliques. The pleated detail throughout the design is trimmed with a metallic lace. There is a single layer of lace on the sleeves. It has a square neckline with lace trim.
