Highland Chieftain by Hannah Howell: Sometimes what we want isn’t Highland-Chieftainwhat we get. Sometimes when it seems like all is lost, it’s really just the beginning and sometimes it really is just some times.

Bethoc Matheson tried her hardest to protect her siblings. She knew what could happen if she didn’t. That didn’t mean that she didn’t think about the what if’s and the possibilities of life outside of her small world though.

Callum MacMillian knew the world could be dark, but he had worked hard as he had grown up to protect the young, the innocent and those who had no protection. He was always seeking something though, even when he didn’t really know what it was he was seeking.

When Bethoc and Callum met both of their worlds are forever changed, but neither knew just how much but as trials and tribulations come forth will they make the most of them, or fall back on old habits?

Ms. Howell has returned to the Murray family and while this seems like such an amazing thing as the original Murrays have such an amazing set of stories and are books you want to read and reread over and over this particular novel doesn’t live up to the standard that Ms. Howell had set for herself. To be honest with you though it’s the plot that doesn’t. The charaters and most of the descriptions are still well done and well thought out, the story just doesn’t move as the others have. While the story is a Murray it just doesn’t feel like a Howell.

Responsible for protecting her younger siblings from their abusive father, Bethoc Matheson is in no position to rescue another soul in Scotland. Yet when she sees a bleeding man on the verge of drowning, that’s exactly what she does, securing him safely in a cave where she can return day after day to tend to his wounds.

Sir Callum MacMillan can scarcely believe such a slight lass as Bethoc could save him from the grasp of death. But he knows the telltale marks of an angry fist on her skin, and he knows she has the soul of a fighter within her feminine frame. Raised to be a protector of the weak by his Murray clansman, Callum would prefer to be the one saving her—and save her, he will. If he can first survive the treacherous attack that led him into her irresistible arms . . .
