In His Rebellious Lass (Scottish Hearts #1) by Callie Hutton, inheriting Lady Bridget McDuff as his ward is the last thing the Marquess of Campbell wants. But taking on the position anyway, he decides he’s going to see her married and out of his hair as soon as possible. However, Bridget doesn’t make things easy for him, especially when marriage is the last thing on her mind. Will Bridget get her way or will Cam find himself falling under the spell of the feisty, red-headed Scottish beauty?

”Are you saying you will not marry me – just to be sure, please know I am not asking – because there is another gentleman who has captured your heart?” He tried to keep the hopefulness out of his voice.
“No. Like you, I don’t wish to marry at all. Ever. No husband. I intend to be a very happy spinster.” She narrowed her eyes. “All I have to do is break the will or wait until I reach three and twenty years.”
“I thought all young ladies wanted a husband.”
Lady Bridget sniffed. “Spoken like a true rake who has probably been beating off would-be wives and their persistent mamas for years.”

Ms. Hutton always writes fun and entertaining historical romances and brings the perfect balance of emotion, romance, chemistry between the main characters and the era she’s writing about and I’ve got to say that this story is a wonderful start to this new series for her. Really, the way this story started had me smiling from the moment the hero and heroine come face-to-face for the first time. Certainly, the heroine is exasperating in the hero’s eyes because she’s not willing to fall in line with his plans. No way does she want anything to do with marriage and she’s willing to do anything to get her way.

With the dialogue, it was extremely engaging and I couldn’t get enough of the hero and heroine, especially because the heroine goes to great lengths to annoy the hero. Really, there’s a serious battle of wills and it was interesting to see which one of the pair would come out on top. Would it be the hero or the heroine? Moreover, the main characters have such great chemistry and I loved their growing relationship, as they go from sort-of enemies to somewhat friends then so much more. Really, the heroine really tests the hero’s patience but I liked that he didn’t let her get to him (well, let her get to him too much that he reaches a breaking point.)

As for the main characters, the heroine made me smile and laugh with her antics to tick off the hero and get him to see how serious she is about not marrying anyone. I also liked her resilience, her courageousness and her quirkiness at times, which was more to do with her need to show men that she’s undesirable and not worth pursuing. While the hero, he’s smart, resilient and persistent when it comes to convincing the heroine to see things his way. I also liked that he was good to the heroine, even though there were times when it was palpable he wanted to be rid of her because she wasn’t supposed to be his ward. Indeed, he’d only inherited her as his ward.

”Will it be a problem?” Bridget chewed her lip.
“A major problem.”
“Hmm. Now what?”
“You need to get married. And fast.”
Bridget closed her eyes and shook her head. “I told you. I will not marry Davenport.”
“Not Davenport. I would never allow that. You will marry me.”

Overall, Ms. Hutton has delivered a fantastic read in this book where the romance was delightful and the ending had me worried for the heroine because of what happens but had me loving that the hero did everything he could to convince the heroine that she’s the one for him. I would recommend His Rebellious Lass by Callie Hutton, if you enjoy Historical Romance, the enemy to lovers trope or books by authors Tina Gabrielle, Sharon Cullen, Robyn DeHart and Vanessa Riley.
