In Secrets of a Billionaire’s Mistress (One Night with Consequences #29) by Sharon Hendrick, Renzo Sabatini and Darcy Denton are from completely different worlds. Still, it didn’t stop Renzo from pursuing her until he wore her down. Now, she finds herself a mistress to a billionaire and with every moment she spends with him, the harder she finds it is going to be to break things off, knowing they can’t last. However, when Darcy discovers she’s pregnant, will Renzo be able to handle the surprise pregnancy or will he end things between them?
“Do you know how good that feels?” he said as he began to move inside her.
She swallowed. “I’ve…I’ve got a pretty good idea.”
“Oh, Darcy. It’s you,” he groaned, his eyes closing. “Only you.”=
He said the words like a ragged prayer or maybe a curse – but Darcy didn’t read anything into them because she knew exactly what he meant.
Ms. Kendrick is an author whose books I’ve really enjoyed in the past, but this book gave me mixed feelings. In the beginning, I found it really hard to like either of the main characters. Renzo is a typical arrogant billionaire expecting everyone to jump to his commands and Darcy is a weak heroine that just can’t say no to him. However, in saying that, they did redeem themselves throughout this book and with this story encompassing the surprise pregnancy trope; a trope that I love, I knew they were going to win me over eventually, so I had to keep reading.
The dialogue was intense due to the main character back stories, especially that of the heroine. All her life she’s been ridiculed because of her mother and I could understand why she held so much back from the hero for fear he’d do the same. Then again, I could also understand why she wouldn’t divulge her painful past when he’s so adamant he’s not a forever relationship kind-of-guy and his troubled past keeps him from getting too close to anyone. Moreover, I liked how there was a considerable change in the heroine as this story progressed, even if that change took longer to happen than I thought it would. No longer was she willing to give in to Renzo and what he wanted. Instead, she was willing to fight for what she wanted, especially after the hero discovers her most painful secret; the one she was so desperate to keep hidden because she was ashamed.
“I’m not going to be a lot of use to you, am I – if I start letting emotion get the better of me?”
And Darcy smiled as she shook her head. “Bring it on,” she said softly. “I like seeing my strong and powerful man reduced to putty by the sight of his newborn baby.”
“It seems as if my son has the same power over me as his mother,” Renzo responded drily.
Overall, I did like this book that delivered nicely detailed sex scenes and a couple that have to find it within themselves to trust the other, otherwise their relationship will never be more than how it started with Darcy as his mistress, instead of the woman Renzo wanted to spend the rest of his life with. The way this story ended had me cheering for Darcy’s efforts. She’s definitely brave the way she confronts Renzo, because if she didn’t take him by surprise then the hero wouldn’t have come to the realization of how much she meant to him. I would recommend Secrets of a Billionaire’s Mistress, if you enjoy the surprise pregnancy trope.

I’m normally impressed by Ms. Kendrick’s writing, but this book fell flat for me. There was just something about the characters in the beginning that I couldn’t connect with. But in the end I did like the book overall. If you’re thinking about giving this book a chance, I hope you enjoy it. Happy reading, Teresa!
