In The Backup Plan by Jill Shalvis, Lauren and Alice had been best friends when they were younger, and Alice had a crush on Knox. Now all three of them are reunited when they each inherit a part of the Wild West B&B. Despite the tensions between them all, they need to work together to get the B&B up and running again. Alice’s main goal is to leave town again, but Knox and Lauren are hoping they convince her to stay and help them run the B&B.

In the process of repairing the B&B, the trio discover a series of letters written by Eleanor, the woman they inherited the B&B from. From the letters they discover not only how they unknowingly helped Eleanor, but how Eleanor helped them as well, even if some of her methods were underhanded. She truly cared about them and wanted what was best for them, even after she was gone.

This is a story about three wounded people with difficult pasts coming together to discover second chances, forgiveness, healing, friendship, and love. It’s about forming a family not created by blood, but by love and respect, even if it takes time to get there. The Backup Plan is a heartfelt story that runs an emotional gamut with heartbreak, anger, and humor. While it is the third book in the Sunrise Cover series, it can be read as a standalone.

When Alice receives a call about an unexpected windfall, she’s stunned to learn the gift is a falling-apart-at-the-seams old Wild West B&B she once considered home–and she’s inherited it along with two strangers. Except they weren’t always strangers. Once upon a time, they were friends. One is her ex-BFF Lauren. The other is Knox, the only guy to ever break her heart, all while never even knowing she existed.

It turns out their lives are unknowingly entangled because they once separately helped the same woman without expecting anything in return. Years later, Alice, Lauren, and Knox are broken in their own way, with their own history–and secrets– causing them to start out on the wrong foot with each other. But according to the will, they must renovate and be partners in the inn for one year or else lose their inheritance.

Stuck together, they make a list of rules to keep the peace–rules that end up doing the opposite, but by some miracle they find what they didn’t even know they were looking for–acceptance, true friendship, and in a case (or two!), true love.

Jill Shalvis always delivers an interesting, well developed story. This one sounds like a good exploration of how individual lives can come together and develop because of an unknown common history.

Jill Shalvis is such an incredible author & never fails to pull on your heart strings with her writing. You will laugh, cry, & feel all the emotions the characters are experiencing. Alice, Lauren (former best friends) & Knox have inherited an inn that needs to be restored then they can all go back to their lives. We can’t forget the adorable Pickles, Knox’s dog. They have all experienced trauma & painful pasts & have all dealt with it in their own ways. Lauren stayed in Tahoe & Knox and Alice both left town, none of them truly healing & moving on from all their hurt. Alice & Lauren heal their friendship, Alice & Knox find love with each other all the while the three of them truly becoming friends & family. Such a beautifully written book with characters you will love, flaws & all. I received an arc for an honest review.
