Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Rachel and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, Her Scandalous Suitor!

Hi, lovely readers! I am so happy to be here today and have a chance to tell you more about my latest release Her Scandalous Suitor!

To start off, can you please tell us a little bit about this book?:

Her Scandalous Suitor (previously published as The Seduction of Emily) is a Victorian romance set in the wonderful historical city of Bath, England.
It is full of drama, intrigue and romance as the heroine Emily Darson begins to believe that she is worth more than the arranged marriage she feels obligated to go ahead with as loyalty to her father’s legacy. She neither loves nor respects her future husband and when she meets confidence trickster Will Samson, he opens her eyes to a whole new life. He challenges and excites her to make decisions and changes that could make a difference to her forever…

Please share your favorite lines or quote(s) from this book:

“Although unsure of what she expected to see in his eyes, it certainly hadn’t been sincere concern. He was a man after all. Didn’t all men consider women a possession? Something to do with as they willed? Shame warmed her cheeks. Rubbish. Mr. Samson was unlike any man she’d ever met.”

“Will was not afraid to admit weaknesses, and his biggest right now was silently preparing to question him. Beautiful, intelligent, and witty, Emily would sooner or later turn her soft, dulcet tones and big chestnut-brown eyes on him, expecting answers. There was no doubt in his mind she suspected his reasons for making her acquaintance had nothing to do with a
missing nephew and everything to do with Milne.”

What inspired this book?

The same things that inspire all my books! British period dramas, historical non-fiction, biographies and documentaries – I am a history geek through & through!

How did you ‘get to know’ your main characters? Did they ever surprise you?

The only way I believe any writer gets to know their characters is by writing the characters’ story – for me personally, it isn’t until I’m about halfway, even two thirds the way, through my first draft that I beginning to really know who my characters are deep down. I then tend to weave my new-found knowledge into the first half of the book in the second draft.
Spending time with your characters is the only way to get to know them!

What was your favorite scene to write?

Ooh, too many to pick just one!
I can tell you that any scenes when Emily and Will are in places they shouldn’t be wrote themselves – I loved pulling Emily far out of her comfort zone and have her enjoy every moment 🙂

What was the most difficult scene to write?

There is a very short part of a scene where Emily is attacked by her fiance – that might be a little upsetting to readers as it was for me to write, but at the same time, it needs to be in the book as it is such a pivotal moment in Emily’s character journey and in the storyline itself.

Would you say this book showcases your writing style or is it a departure for you?

It definitely showcases my writing style – all of my historical novels are a mix of drama, intrigue and romance. I love writing villains as much as I do hero and heroines, I’m afraid! I don’t believe romance novels should be all sunshine and roses, it’s the darker moments in life that make us strong and what makes us admire the strength in others. Fictional characters included!

What do you want people to take away from reading this book?

A feeling of being thoroughly entertained, satisfied with the ending and realising they have been entirely taken away from their own lives for a while – and hopefully wanting to read more books I’ve written!

What are you currently working on? What other releases do you have planned?

I am just working on the final draft of what will be the first book in my first ever WWII series – this is a fairly big departure for me as I tend to set my books in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, but I’ve loved writing it and the three women who the series revolves around are fabulous in their different ways!
This book will be released in August 2024, but my next release, Dressing the Countess, comes out May 9th 2024 and it’s a new Victorian romance set in the court of the fictional Earl & Countess of Bath…

Excerpt from Her Scandalous Suitor:

A movement barely inches to her side caught Emily’s attention. She turned and swallowed the gasp that rose sharply in her throat.
It was the man who winked at her in the auction room.
He strolled toward her, his shining sea-blue eyes locked on hers. Her courage inside the room promptly abandoned her. Emily’s heart turned over. He stood at least half a foot taller than she, his wide shoulders absurdly broad, his confidence disturbing. She bit back a nervous laugh as an entirely inappropriate imagining came unbidden into her mind. Oh, to have him fling her over those shoulders and escape with her into the night!
He flashed her a knowing smile—God spare her, she smiled back.
Never before had a man’s gaze enticed such inexplicable naughtiness in her. Danger screamed its warning. What was she thinking? There was no time for dalliance or distraction. Nicholas’s gruff cough snapped her attention.
The handsome stranger snatched his gaze from hers and touched his finger to the brim of his hat. “Good afternoon, sir.”
Nicholas nodded. “Can I help you?”
“I wanted to offer my congratulations.” The man held out his hand. “A very fine win.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Nicholas took his offered hand. “Thank you. Now, if you’ll excuse—”
“Yes, quite the battle you had in there.” Fine lines crinkled the corners of the stranger’s phenomenal eyes. “Nothing beats a fiery one on one.”
He turned and looked directly at Emily, his raised eyebrow referring the sentiment to her rather than Nicholas. She should have been outrageously affronted, yet a burst of delicious excitement rushed through her veins and warmed her entire body.
