Colton Family Bodyguard by Jennifer Morey is the third book in the Coltons of Mustang Valley series, a Harlequin Romantic Suspense series written by various authors. The series has an overall arc of a Colton family mystery of a baby switched at birth and the family patriarch shot and in a coma.

Hazel Hart is an accomplished chef. Everyone at the upscale restaurant where she used to work raved about the dishes she prepared, but she wanted to be her own boss so she left the restaurant and started a meal service business. This gives her more time with her precious five-year-old daughter, Evie. Evie’s father left before Evie was born and never had anything to do with Evie. Hazel and Evie have just delivered meals to one of Hazel’s favorite customers and were about to enter Hazel’s car when Evie mentions she just saw a man hit another man on the head and dump him in the trunk. Before Hazel could process this announcement from Evie the car started racing towards them. Hazel wasn’t sure she could get them to safety before the car hit them. Fortunately well-respected bodyguard Callum Colton was outside his office and grabbed Hazel and Evie back and onto the sidewalk.

Callum Colton is a much-sought-after bodyguard whose one rule was that he never took mother-child cases. He had noticed Hazel and Evie from his office window and watched them. He also noted a car parked down the street that put him on alert for some reason. He had stepped outside his office so he saw the suspicious car start racing toward Hazel and Evie when they returned to their car and prepared to enter it. Calllum’s instincts kicked in and he janked them back out of harm’s way just in time.

The suspicious car raced away. The police are called and somehow Callum is at the police station agreeing to protect Hazel and Evie. He doesn’t do woman and child protection but somehow he finds Evie totally adorable and her mother much more than adorable. He is attracted to Hazel.

This book moves the arc along as Callum and Hazel do some investigating and follow clues to help find some answers to the mystery. I am really enjoying this storyline and look forward to the next book in the series, Colton First Responder by Linda O. Johnson.
